Carmarthenshire Music Service held its annual Senior Music Festival over two evenings in March. The Senior Groups rehearse on a monthly or day-course basis, and this concert was a chance to display the results of two terms of hard work by both pupils and staff.
The First concert was held at the Lyric Theatre, Carmarthen on the 17th March and featured the Senior Harp Ensemble, County Girls Choir and the Senior Orchestra.
The appreciative audience was treated to performances of a wide variety of music including classical music favourites, traditional folk music, pop and music from film and television.
The evening also included the presentation of the Terry Jones Memorial Prize and this year’s recipients were Rosey Hennessy (Maes y Gwendraeth), Charlie Bleasdale (Bro Dinefwr) and Angus Bruce (Bro Myrddin).
The second concert was held at Theatr y Ffwrnes, Llanelli on the 23rd March and featured the Senior String Orchestra, Big Band and the Senior Wind Band.
Once again a wide variety of music was performed including a wonderful selection of music in different styles from the world of film and television by the String Orchestra. The Big Band played some of the great jazz classics featuring improvised solos from a number of instrumentalists and the evening’s performances concluded with the Wind Band featuring the talented trumpet section in the well known ‘Bugler’s Holiday’.
The evening also included the presentation of the Ralph Davies Memorial Award for the most promising jazz musician and this year’s recipient was William Myers (Pembrokeshire College).
